Our classic margarita needed a festive twist! Enter Clayton’s Holiday Margarita!

Holiday Margarita

Since you all love the original Clayton’s Margarita recipe — continuously one of my most popular blog posts — I thought it would be fun to add this simple twist to the classic recipe like we did with Clayton’s Grapefruit Margarita. Yeah, it doesn’t take rocket science to make a tweak or two to his original recipe, but, TIS THE SEASON to have a little fun and give everything a little holiday spirit! A little pomegranate juice, a sprig of rosemary — and ho, ho, ho the perfect holiday cocktail!!!

Clayton's Holiday Margarita

And if you are not familiar with the original recipe, don’t let the egg whites scare you! Bartenders often use egg whites in their crafted cocktails to help create delicious foam. It seems strange but it is one of my favorite parts of the recipe! And you do not even need to get the blender out to create the foam. If you’re making a small batch and do not want to mess with the blender, simply add all of the ingredients to your shaker and shake away until you begin to create the foam.

Stay tuned for more holiday recipes that will be great additions to your table this year!

Holiday Clayton Margarita

Servings: 4

Ingredients

  • 1 cup good tequila (We love Lalo or Casamigos; you can always use a little less if you don't want it as strong)
  • 1/4 cup cointreau
  • 1/2 cup simple syrup
  • 1/4 cup fresh lime juice
  • 1/4 cup pomegranate juice
  • 1 tsp egg whites (fresh or out of the carton is fine!)
  • salt, for serving (I love Jose's Turbo Salt for this recipe — sweet and salty with a kick)

Instructions

  • Combine all ingredients in a blender and blend until very frothy!
  • Pour over a salt-rimmed glass filled with ice.
  • Enjoy!

Notes

Clayton says he never stores his batch of margaritas in the fridge, as they tend to get tart in the fridge. He leaves on the counter while people serve up their own glasses. If foam begins to disappear, simply blend again before pouring another round.

    1. I wouldn’t do equal amounts– that would be a bit too strong i think. I would just add a tablespoon or so and you can always add more, to taste, to sweeten.

Made these for an outdoor happy hour…so festive and yummy. 4 stars only because clayton’s original margaritas are my absolute favorite

    1. I normally just make it myself! it’s just equal parts sugar and water on the stove top, bring to a boil, then simmer and stir until sugar is dissolved. Sometimes I use Monkfruit for a lower-calorie option but Clayton doesn’t like it as much and says it ruins the recipe! haha.

A friend made these for a recent party (minus the egg whites) and they are delicious! I actually mixed my glass with a splash of Topo Chico (like a real Texan 😉) and it was delicious and bubbly!

      1. This sounds gross, and admittedly I have never tried it, but a lot of people who prefer not to use egg whites will use aquafaba. The liquid from a can of chickpeas- they do equal amounts as you would egg white- and it supposedly does not change the flavor of the cocktail.

      2. A lot of vegan dishes use Aquafaba (liquid from a can of chickpeas) as an egg replacement and it froths pretty well. Just not sure if it would change the taste!?

    1. Chick pea liquid is a common replacement for egg whites in cocktails. It gives the foam with no eggs, and doesn’t give the drink any off taste.

          1. Ohh love this idea, i’ll have to work on it!! I would do frozen strawberries and blend it with some lime, tequila, and cointreau!

      1. I love trying new marg recipes and this one looks fab! What type of tequila do you use as far as blanco or silver vs reposado?

    1. Made these tonight and they are seriously incredible!! We dusted just a tiny bit of powdered sugar on top to increase the festivity 😉 thanks so much!
