When it comes to hobbies, my husband has tons of them; but, the one he is most passionate about is his Vinyl collection. We have shelves and shelves filled with tons of fantastic vinyls that he has collected over years and years. When we have a calm weekend (which is rare these days) his favorite thing to do is going to a record store and shop for hours. Sometimes he gets me to go with him and I enjoy it for about…eh, 30 minutes. Then, get me out of there! He could spend an entire day there, no joke.

As far as entertaining goes, my hubby and I are quite the duo… not to toot our own horn or anything. I cook, he is a fantastic griller and cocktail maker, AND his music selection is always a topic of conversation. He always plays fantastic music that is just perfect depending on the occasion and mood. I just love him for that!

When I asked my husband to compile some of his favorite albums for hosting a dinner party it was as if a ghost walked in the room. How in the world could he only pick a few? But I pestered him enough and here we have it. 7 fantastic albums that you should own for entertaining…in no particular order because that would be WAY too much to ask of my music loving hubby. He made sure to capture multiple genres: Soul, World, Classic Rock, Country, Jazz, and Modern Instrumental Rock.

  1. Otis Redding — The Dock of the Bay
  2. Leon Bridges– Coming Home
  3. Buena Vista Social Club at Carnegie Hall
  4. Khruangbin — The Universe Smiles Upon You
  5. Jim Croce– You Don’t Mess Around With Jim
  6. Willie Nelson and Family — Let’s Face the Music and Dance
  7. The Ben Webster Quintet — Soulville

Lastly, if you don’t have a record player, you should. The sound quality is not only better but, you are also listening to albums in the order and the way they were meant to be listened. When we started dating and lived in an apartment we just bought a little Crosley Traveler and loved it. Now we’ve upgraded to some kind of fancy one that hooks up to our surround sound in our house.

He has wayyy more recommendations as far as music goes so if you enjoy this post, let me know in the comments below and we will continue to do posts like this one here on occasion!! 😉

  2. Absolutely love this. My very first purchase, when I got my first job at 15, was a Kenwood stereo system. I still have all the components, except the speakers, 38 years later. I still have all my old albums and buy up all that I can find a at yard, garage and estate sales.

  5. Thank you for sharing! My boyfriend has a similar love for collecting and shopping for old vinyls. I laughed at your admission that it keeps you entertained for a short period of time, because I feel the same way – I’m bored after 15 minutes! However, I so appreciate his taste in music and respect the patience he has for curating his collection. I will definitely be passing this post along to him as he is always on the look out for more essentials to add to his collection! I just love your blog, keep up the good work!
