Here is a delightful summer grilled shrimp skewer recipe that will light up your life, Bang Bang Shrimp Skewers with Sesame Slaw.
Many of you may know Bang Bang Shrimp as the Bonefish Grill appetizer that is a must to order. Bang Bang Shrimp Sauce is just the perfect balance of sweet, spicy, and creamy and I have brought all of those same flavors together in this summer grilling rendition which is a great way to use the versatile sauce. Typically, Bang Bang Sauce is made a bit sweeter with Sweet Thai Chile sauce; however, I tried to keep this dish Whole30 so I opted to use a Whole30 compliant Sriracha combined with mayo, lime, and garlic and the end result is just fantastic — you do not even miss the extra sweetness!
I also chose to pair the grilled shrimp with this crunchy, crispy sesame-infused slaw that I absolutely love. It provides a cool and crisp bite that balances the creaminess and heat of the Bang Bang Shrimp. The entire meal comes together in absolutely no time at all, making these Bang Bang Shrimp Skewers with Sesame Slaw definitely one to be at the top of your summer grilling hit list!

Bang Bang Shrimp Skewers
Ingredients
For the Slaw:
- 2 cloves garlic minced
- 2 tbsp avocado oil
- 1 tbsp rice vinegar
- ½ tsp toasted sesame oil
- ½ tsp ground ginger
- 2 tbsp lime juice
- 8 oz coleslaw mix sub shredded cabbage
- 2 tbsp finely chopped cilantro leaves
- Salt and pepper to taste
For the Bang Bang Sauce:
- â…“ cup homemade mayonnaise
- 2 cloves garlic minced
- ½ tsp fish sauce
- 1-2 tbsp sriracha 1 for mild, 2 for spicy
- 1 tbsp lime juice
- Pinch of salt
For the Shrimp:
- 8 wooden skewers
- 1 ½ lb jumbo shrimp peeled and deveined with tail off
- 2 tbsp avocado oil
- 1 tsp sesame oil
- 1 tsp salt
- ½ tsp pepper
Instructions
- Prior to starting the recipe, soak your skewers in warm water for at least 10 minutes (this helps to prevent them from catching on fire).
Make the Slaw:
- In a large mixing bowl, add the garlic, avocado oil, rice vinegar, toasted sesame oil, ground ginger and lime juice and whisk to combine.
- Add the coleslaw mix and cilantro to the bowl and toss to combine then add salt and pepper to taste. Set aside while you prepare the shrimp.
Make the Bang Bang Sauce:
- In a small bowl, add the mayonnaise, garlic, fish sauce, sriracha lime juice and salt and whisk to combine. Set aside while you prepare the shrimp.
Prepare the Shrimp:
- In a large bowl, add the shrimp, olive oil, sesame oil, salt and pepper and toss to coat.
- Next, thread the shrimp onto the skewers. Hold two skewers* side by side (parralel to one another) upright and carefully thread the shrimp onto the skewers. You should be able to fit 6 shrimp on each set of skewers and set aside while your grill heats. (I like to thread my shrimp on two skewers because Food held together with two parallel skewers is less likely to spin or slither off.)
- Heat grill over medium-high heat (350- 400 degrees F) and oil the grill grates (o to this, dip a wadded paper towel in a little oil and, using tongs, wipe the oil evenly over the grate. Be careful not to use too much oil, because that's a sure fire way to start a good flare-up—a little goes a long way here.)
- Place the skewers on the grill grates and grill the shrimp with the lid on about 2 minutes a side, or until they are almost cooked through. Then, brush the shrimp all over with the bang bang sauce and continue to cook for 1-2 more minutes, or until they are just cooked through and are no longer transparent.
- Remove the shrimp from the grill and brush on the reserved sauce. Serve with the slaw and enjoy!

Another delicious recipe!! Loved it so much!! The sauce is soooo good!!
grilling tonight for a dad & daughter date but he’s not a cole slaw fan! what would you recommend for a side option?
Made this last night and LOVE it!! Also delicious to combine the shrimp, sauce, and slaw into a corn tortilla for a yummy little taco!
Curious if you tried this with some arrowroot on the shrimp before grilling?? I might try that next time?
I haven’t tried that! but HECK YES to the tacos.
Would subbing the avocado oil with olive oil make a noticeable difference in the flavor profile in the slaw?
not at all!
Any alternative to Siracha to make it more mild? I like crushed red pepper spicy but not Sriracha spic usually y. Can crp be alternative or anything else w sauce? Thank u
Yes, you can just add a bit of crushed red pepper to taste. The sriracha does add a lot of flavor, so just keep that in mind. You could just use a smaller amount.
Bomb shrimp! Made this with the cilantro lime rice from your cookbook! Amazing!
Any substitue for mayo?
Greek yogurt would work
So good!! I love the sauce with it. I also served with white rice to have a carb. I drizzled the sauce on the rice and it was delicious.
Do you by chance have the nutritional information available for this meal at all?
Could you assemble this ahead of time to grill the next day? Would the bang bang sauce be ok if made beforehand?
absolutely you can make ahead and keep refrigerated!
If I don’t have access to a grill what is the best way to prepare the shrimp? Thanks!
You can either use a grill pan, or just sear them in a skillet (no skewer needed) and toss in the sauce at the end.
I made these in the air fryer (added a bit of tapioca starch first) & they were smokin’ good!
yay!! thanks for sharing!
What temp/time for the air fryer?? I may use that method tonight.
